By this point, most people had applied already. My advice: if you’re unsure of whether to apply, get all your application materials together (including pre- writing secondary essays) but don’t press the submit button until after you get to NYMC and get the green light. Lastly, on a positive note, I will add that nearly every faculty or staff member I dealt with was extremely supportive and willing to donate their time when called upon. If you make an effort, you will receive support; I just believe the effort shouldn. More specifically, in the first trimester, you take roughly half a course load (you could even argue less than half in terms of difficulty), allowing time to cram in some last- minute extracurricular activities as addendums to your application. This was a major reason for my enrollment at NYMC over Georgetown: I was able to shadow and volunteer with multiple organizations. Maintaining continuous clinical experience is a nice way to demonstrate to admissions committees that you are dedicated to the medical profession. All that said, the types of clinical activities available were not particularly exciting. Volunteering at Westchester Medical Center was limited mainly to answering phones and handing out crayons in the ER. As for shadowing, I am enormously grateful that Dr. Velisek set me up with shadowing in the NICU, but again it wasn. There were a couple other clinical volunteer opportunities through NYMC student clubs, but it was difficult to find anything that allowed participation on a consistent basis.
